On a recent morning in federal court in New York, Jay-Z, represented by his high-powered attorney Alex Spiro from the Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan law firm, filed a request seeking either the dismissal of the allegations made against him or the disclosure of the identity of the Plaintiff. The brief stated, “Defendant is respectfully seeking either dismissal of the allegations or disclosure of the Plaintiff’s identity. Fair is fair.”
The allegations in question involve an incident that allegedly occurred on September 7, 2000, where Sean “Diddy” Combs is accused of attacking a young woman known as Jane Doe during a drug-fueled event known as a “freak off.” The incident, which took place following the MTV VMAs, was detailed in a graphic complaint filed on October 20. While the complaint implicated Combs for the sexual assault, it only referenced a male “Celebrity A” and an unknown “Celebrity B.”
It is widely believed that Jay-Z, also known as Shawn Carter, is the famous “Celebrity A” mentioned in the documents.
In a statement issued by Spiro, he emphasized the importance of Mr. Carter knowing the identity of the individual accusing him of such serious crimes. Spiro stated, “Mr. Carter deserves to know the identity of the person who is effectively accusing him – in sensationalized, publicity-hunting fashion – of criminal conduct, demanding massive financial compensation, and tarnishing a decades-old reputation.”
The original complaint, filed by attorney Tony Buzbee, only identified the celebrities involved as “Celebrity A” and “Celebrity B.” However, in subsequent filings, Jay-Z confirmed that he was indeed “Celebrity A” and expressed his shock and disapproval at the allegations made against him.
In response to Jay-Z’s request for the Plaintiff’s identity to be revealed, Buzbee argued that the Plaintiff should be allowed to proceed anonymously under the New York City Victims of Gender-Motivated Violence Protection Act. He also pointed to the similar claims made by other Plaintiffs represented by Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan as evidence that anonymity should be preserved.
