During the afternoon hours of a typical Thursday, ChatGPT suddenly became nonfunctional for a substantial number of users. The chatbot, known for its conversational abilities, was rendered unable to provide responses to user queries. Some individuals attempting to interact with the chatbot were met with an error message indicating an “internal server error.”

The onset of this disruption occurred around 1:30 PM Eastern Time, coinciding with a surge in reports on Down Detector, a platform utilized for detecting outages. OpenAI took proactive measures to address the issue, posting a status update on their website at 2 PM Eastern Time. This update informed users that ChatGPT, the associated API, and Sora, a text-to-video generator, were currently experiencing “high error rates.”

By 6:15 PM Eastern Time, OpenAI reported that Sora had been fully restored to operation and that the APIs were beginning to recover. However, the comprehensive resolution for the issues surrounding ChatGPT and its APIs was still a work in progress at that time.

Interestingly, Microsoft, as the exclusive cloud provider for OpenAI, also encountered a “power issue” at one of its data centers around the same time as the disruptions at OpenAI. This event affected various services in North America, including Xbox cloud gaming. The specific “upstream provider” responsible for the issues was not explicitly identified.

One notable impact was identified in the South Central United States region, where users experienced storage latency, timeouts, and HTTP 500 errors. Customers affected by a power incident in this area were notified of a potential degraded experience starting at 18:44 UTC on December 26, 2024. Microsoft swiftly responded to the situation by implementing mitigation measures and verifying the recovery status of the impacted services. Regular updates were promised within a hour.

As of the latest modifications made on December 26, 2024, at 21:22 UTC, Microsoft confirmed that the afflicted data center had been fully restored to power shortly after 5 PM Eastern Time.

Over the past few months, ChatGPT has encountered intermittent periods of downtime. Notably, following the recent introduction of Sora to ChatGPT subscribers by OpenAI, both the video generation tool and ChatGPT experienced a notable period of downtime. Additionally, in June of that year, a widespread outage affected ChatGPT and other AI tools, leading to a temporary shutdown.

In a subsequent update on December 26th, Microsoft and OpenAI have provided additional information regarding the ongoing efforts to restore full functionality to ChatGPT and its associated services.
